Philip Gulley: I Love You, Miss Huddleston
HarperCollins
In 1990 Philip Gulley began writing newsletter essays for the twelve members of his Quaker meeting in Indiana. Fourteen books later, with more than a million copies in print, master storyteller Gulley continues to share the tender and hilarious real-life moments that capture important truths of life. Set in 1960s Danville, Indiana, Gulley’s story recounts his coming-of-age journey, his infatuation with his sixth-grade teacher, Miss Huddleston, and his struggle to be held back and thus enjoy her charms for one more year. “Gulley is a Quaker pastor from Indiana with a charming sense of small-town life – and a shrewd sense of life in general” (Wall Street Journal). http://www.philipgulleybooks.com/AboutTheAuthor.html
Jill Kargman: The Ex-Mrs. Hedgefund
Dutton Books/Penguin Group
Jill Kargman, who grew up on the Upper East Side, where she now lives with her husband and two daughters, is the ideal chronicler of the lives of New York’s ultra-rich and ultra-ambitious. She captures their mores, conversations, and backstabbing with supreme style and ease. Kargman is the author of Momzillas and the coauthor of Wolves in Chic Clothing and The Right Address, both New York Times bestsellers. She has written for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Town & Country. “It’s impossible to resist the charms of this modern Manhattan fairy tale. . . . What makes it all so enticing is watching those evil society stepsisters get their deliciously just deserts along the way” (People). www.jillkargman.com (Photo courtesy of Donna Newman.)
Laila Lalami: Secret Son
Algonquin Books
Youssef-el-Mekki, age nineteen, is living with his mother in the slums of Casablanca when he discovers that the father whom he believed dead is, in fact, alive and eager to befriend and support him. Leaving his mother behind, Youssef moves into a life and future he could only dream of: a famous and influential father, his own penthouse apartment, and all the luxuries associated with his new status. But an abrupt reversal of fortune returns him to the streets and friends of his childhood. It is a tale “told simply, beautifully, with heart and panache” (Gary Shteyngart). Lalami’s work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and the Washington Post. She is also the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship. www.lailalalami.com
Mary McGarry Morris: The Last Secret
Shaye Areheart Books/Random House
Widely praised as “a superb storyteller” (Washington Post) and “one of our finest American writers” (Miami Herald), Mary McGarry Morris has been compared to John Steinbeck and Carson McCullers. Vanished, her debut novel, was nominated for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. A Dangerous Woman came next, becoming one of Time Magazine’s Five Best Novels of the Year as well as a major motion picture. Her Songs in Ordinary Time emerged as an Oprah Book Club selection and CBS television movie, and was followed by the highly acclaimed Fiona Range. The Last Secret is about a woman who discovers her husband’s affair while at the same time a dark secret from her own past re-emerges with devastating consequences. www.marymcgarrymorris.com (Photo courtesy of Melissa Morris Danisch.)
